The Early bird vs the Wise Owl ..

I am lucky enough to live in the beautiful Aberdeenshire countryside and one of the things I enjoy most, when I am not running around after my newborn, is walking with my family in the forest with our dog.

Whilst I was out the other day, trying to prevent my hound from disappearing into a field of sheep, it struck me that whilst nature is no doubt a wonderful thing, most of its successes and failures are determined by hugely variable factors, which in most circumstances have little reliance on pre-planning or control.

We are all familiar with the phrase, ‘the early bird catches the worm.’ However, how often is that guaranteed? In reality is simply showing up enough anymore? Or are there competitive advantages to be gained elsewhere?

Instinct and fortune may work to some degree but imagine if there was a night owl with an inside knowledge of the forest. Suddenly, the early bird isn’t the only one benefiting from a good meal. If the night owl acquired the right information from other creatures and was able to identify the worms plans and where they would be at any given point, they could guarantee a hit. By taking control of the situation and being strategic, the opportunities are endless for the night owl.
